Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Granit Xhaka will not be leaving the club in the transfer window.
The Swiss international has been strongly linked to Jose Mourinho’s transfer to Roma, although the Gunners have offered him a new contract to persuade him to stay.
Xhaka scored in Arsenal’s 2-1 friendly loss to Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Sunday after coming in to replace Thomas Partey, who appeared to have injured his ankle in the first half.
With the former Atletico Madrid man ready for scans, Arteta seems doubly determined to keep Xhaka in his squad.
“We just talked to the doctor and he’ll do a scan tomorrow. At the moment, he’s not doing well because he was in pain, ”Arteta said of Partey.
He then added on Xhaka: “Granit will stay with us. He is a key member of our team and he wanted to play today, I think it is a very clear commitment on his part that he wants to be here. “
Xhaka’s goal nullified Kai Havertz’s good lead, but Tammy Abraham secured victory for European champions Chelsea after Hector Bellerin missed possession.
Despite the result, Arteta was pleased with his team’s display elements in front of an excited crowd in North London.
“It was a great atmosphere, the fans were right behind the team. It was a great test for us, “he said.
“I think we showed some really positive things and some troubling things when we gave away the ball in difficult positions.”
