Potential sale of Maatsen by Chelsea

Chelsea could decide to part ways with Jan Maatsen in the January transfer window, according to The Telegraph. The Blues have failed in several attempts to agree terms on a new contract for the 21-year-old left-back, and with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, they are expected to try to secure at least some kind of fee for his services to avoid losing him next in summer no refund.

Maatsen came through the youth ranks of several Dutch clubs, including Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven, before joining Chelsea’s under-18 squad in 2018. Since then he has played on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry and Burnley. He was promoted to Chelsea’s senior team this summer and has made four Premier League appearances so far, all off the bench.

But with the likes of Ben Chilwell and Mark Cucurella vying for a place in the team, Maatsen’s reluctance to sign a new Chelsea contract at this stage of his career, when he needs playing time to develop, is not surprising.
