Potential Clash between Aston Villa Captain John McGinn and Former Club Hibernian in Play-offs

Aston Villa captain John McGinn could return to Easter Road after his team faced either Hibernian or Alfalfa in the European Conference League playoffs.

The Scottish midfielder will return to Leith on 24 August if Hibs can beat the Swiss side in the third qualifying round.

McGinn spent three years with Hibs and helped them win the Scottish Cup in 2016 for the first time in 114 years before moving to Villa in 2018.

Earlier in the Champions League run, Rangers were preparing for a potential reunion after being paired with either PSV Eindhoven or Sturm Graz if they went through.

Ibrox have been seeded in the draw but must first beat Swiss team Servette who travel to Glasgow on Wednesday in the first leg of the third qualifying round.

Gers beat PSV 3-2 on aggregate at the same stage last year to advance to the group stage, with Antonio Colak capturing the winner by scoring the only goal in the second leg in the Netherlands.

Sturm Graz have included former Motherwell defender Max Johnston in their European squad, although he has only played for the second team since his recent move.

The Rangers will be at home for the first playoff game in the last two weeks of August. A loss to Servette would send them straight into the Europa League group stage.

Aberdeen could also have a rematch with recent rivals after being paired with BC Haken or Lithuanian Žalgiris Vilnius in the Europa League playoffs. The Dons beat the Swedes 5-1 at Pittodrie two years ago.

Barry Robson’s team is confident that they will make it to the group stage, because if they lose, they will get into the European Conference League.

Also in the Conference League, Hearts will play Croatian Hajduk Split or Greek PAOK if Rosenborg can get through.

Derry City will play Czech team Viktoria Plzen or Maltese Gzira United if they manage to get past Tobol Kostanay from Kazakhstan.

Playoff matches take place during the last two weeks of August.
