Portugal dominates Luxembourg with Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace to secure a big win under Martinez’s management

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal triumphed 6-0 over Luxembourg in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Ronaldo put the ball into play early on with a strikeout before further goals from Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva made it 3-0 within 18 minutes, with Ronaldo adding another just after the half-hour mark.

Second-half goals from substitutes Otavio and Rafael Leão ended another routine Portugal victory after a 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein that kicked off their qualifying campaign and new head coach Roberto Martínez.

They are top of Group J after two games, two points ahead of second-placed Slovakia after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Portugal took the lead in the ninth minute when a ball from Bruno Fernandes to the far post was returned by Nuno Mendes through the net, giving Ronaldo an easy shot from close range.

The advantage was doubled just six minutes later, as this time Silva, who took the ball from the right flank, was sent through Luxembourg goalkeeper Anthony Maurice into the corner of Joao Felix’s goal.

Silva received at the end of a long pass from João Paliña and headed in the third, while Ronaldo grabbed his second and Portugal’s fourth in the 31st minute when Fernandes played him on goal and striker Al-Nasr struck with his left foot below to the right of Maurice.

Portugal made another in the 77th minute when Leão and Otavio teamed up, with the latter throwing a left from the Milan striker.

Leão saw a late penalty saved by Maurice after winning it himself, but soon made up for it when his run from the left ended in a quiet finish.
