Lionel Messi joined the tribute to Pelé following the death of the great Brazilian and three-time World Cup winner on Thursday.

In early December, an 82-year-old man was transferred to palliative care after his body stopped responding to cancer treatment.

Subsequently, his family traveled with him to São Paulo before Christmas, before the Israeli Albert Einstein Hospital confirmed Pele’s death following multiple organ failure.

Sports legends, clubs and organizations paid tribute to the memory of one of the greatest footballers, and Argentine superstar Messi shared his post dedicated to the hero of Santos.

The 2022 World Cup winner simply wrote on social media: “Rest in peace @pele.”

Pelé helped lead Brazil to global success in 1958, 1962 and 1970, and no other player in the tournament’s history lifted the trophy again.

His 77 caps are still a Brazilian record, though Neymar matched the tally with a strike in the World Cup quarter-finals against Croatia in Qatar.

While Pelé has played his part in three World Cup victories, bitter rivals from Argentina have claimed their third crown in the latest FIFA exhibition tournament.

Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia joined the legendary Messi to pay tribute to Pele.

The statement said: “The AFA, through its President Claudio Tapia, regrets the death of the legendary Brazilian football player Pelé, one of the best players in history, and sends its warmest hugs to his loved ones and to all of Brazil.”
