Newcastle are in the best possible position to host Manchester City on Wednesday in the third round of the League Cup with a historic 8-0 win over hosts Sheffield United in matchday six of the English Premier League.
Coach Eddie Howe’s side took three points in the first half, taking the lead through 21st-minute hat-tricks from Sean Longstaff, Dan Born (31) and Dutchman Sven Bothman (35), before adding five points in the second game. Callum Wilson (56) and substitute Anthony Gordon (56), 61), Paraguayan Miguel Almiron (68), Brazilian Bruno Guimarães (73) and Swedish substitute Alexander Isak (87).
With their biggest ever away win in the Premier League (formerly the First Division and Premier League, the previous biggest win being a 6-1 win over Sunderland in December 1955), Newcastle moved their tally up to nine points in eighth place and Sheffield’s result stagnated at an orphaned point after their heaviest defeat in a Home match in the Elite League (the previous heaviest defeat was 0–7 against Ipswich Town in November 1971).
