MLS News: MLS: Nani scores late winner to lift Orlando over Atlanta

Former Manchester United winger Nani scored a last-gasp winning goal to lift Orlando City over Atlanta United 3-2 in the MLS on Friday.

The Portuguese scored Dutchman Silvester van der Water’s cross in the 87th minute for the lead that keeps Orlando in contact with Eastern Conference leaders New England.

Atlanta had taken the lead in the first minute from Josef Martinez’s long-range shot, but Kyle Smith equalized in the first half from Nani’s corner.

Marcelino Moreno restored United’s lead in the 66th minute with a fantastic shot from outside the box.

Orlando put together a fine team goal to equalize the game in the 79th minute with van der Water headed from Benji Michel’s pass.

The Dutch substitute would then provide the pass for Nani’s deciding goal, which was his seventh goal of the season.

New York City remained close to Orlando in the Eastern Conference with their third straight win, a 4-1 win over the Columbus Crew.

City amassed the style, running 2-0 at half time after Valentin Castellanos header and Thiago chip.

Keaton Parks added a third with a deft touch in the 51st minute, meaning it was the first time Columbus had conceded three goals in one game all season.

Santiago Rodriguez came from close range, although he requested a review of the VAR, before Pedro Santos’ consolation punishment.

LA Galaxy, without Javier Hernandez, overtook the Portland Timbers 4-1 to solidify their hold on third place in the west.

Malagasy midfielder Rayan Raveloson pulled off a spectacular felt volley to open the scoring.
