Manchester City 1-1 Everton: Gray stunner dents champions´ title hopes

Demarai Gray’s stunning equalizer undermined Manchester City’s Premier League title bid and eased the pressure on Frank Lampard as Everton won a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

It looked like Lampard’s struggling side was in for more suffering as Erling Haaland continued his incredible first-half scoring performance to give City the lead.

Everton failed to secure any shots until the 64th minute, but they only needed one chance when Gray landed a brilliant shot into the top right corner to end a devastating break.

Pep Guardiola’s side looked overwhelmed by Gray’s interference as their failure to find a winner gave Arsenal the lead in the title race on New Year’s Eve.

Haaland was close at the start when he hit the side net at a tight angle after passing Jordan Pickford, but he couldn’t be denied in the 24th minute.

Careful work from Jack Grealish on the left flank brought Riyad Mahrez level with Haaland, who finished behind Pickford in a crowded penalty area to give City the lead.

Former Everton defender John Stones hit the post with a jump header near half-time and it looked like City were destined to increase their lead as they brought the Toffees back.

However, the visitors silenced Etihad with their first play attempt since the hour mark when Gray broke free and recovered from his stumble to make a terrific run into the far corner to the left of the floor.

Pickford turned down Mahrez from close range as City desperately threw players forward at the late stage, but Everton persevered through 11 minutes of stoppage time, earning a huge point in their survival bid – much to Arsenal’s delight.
