Liverpool’s Klopp Delighted with Team’s Outstanding Performance Against Leeds

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool’s “best performance in a long time” after the Reds thrashed Leeds United 6-1 in Monday’s Premier League clash.

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota scored a brace on either side of a first from Cody Gakpo and a late shot from Darwin Nunez at Elland Road.

The win ended Liverpool’s five-game winless streak in all competitions as Klopp’s side were six points clear of Europa League qualification with a game still to go over fifth-placed Tottenham.

The Liverpool manager has cited his team’s intensity as a key factor in stopping their previously poor form.

“I think it’s the best game we’ve played this season, from every standpoint and aspect of the game,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“I think we made a lot of mistakes, but it was a really good game, sensational goals and counter-pressing, it was the best game in a long time.

“My favorite part was in the 92nd minute when we were chasing the poor guy with the ball from Leeds. I’m very happy with this game.”

Klopp elaborated by suggesting that Liverpool were beginning to gain momentum, with the turning point of their season coming after he fought back two goals at Anfield on 9 April to draw 2-2 against Arsenal.

He added: “This is a common cause. To play good football you need stability, the stability you only get defensively, but when you’re in that kind of negative flow, you make the wrong decisions.

“You think that in order to play better, you have to do attacking things first. We can be super offensive if we react at the right time.

“I can’t explain why our counter-pressing didn’t work, but today it did. It clicked in the second half against Arsenal.

“Today I’m not sure how many goals we scored after we played the ball – that makes all the difference and I think we know it.

“But there is always a small difference between knowing, understanding and actually feeling.”

Liverpool are nine points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United and unlikely to qualify for the Champions League, with Klopp admitting that a top-four finish could be out of the Reds’ reach.

“Where we end up, I don’t know, but it will continue after the season, so we need all the games to understand,” he continued.

“Games are very important. If we can’t achieve anything this season, then we need to use the good results of the last part of the season.

“I have no idea if we can get close, but I don’t think it’s too important. I would like to see us with the same desire, the same passion, the same understanding that we have shown tonight.”
