Liverpool to Acquire Former Melwood Training Ground for Women’s Team Usage

Liverpool have bought out their former Melwood training ground for the women’s team.

The first men’s team vacated the West Derby site in the city in November 2020 for new construction on the existing academy base in Kirkby.

Amid local protests, there were proposals to turn the land into a state-of-the-art multi-generational housing estate by the affordable housing group Torus, but following the relocation of the Robbie Fowler-Jamie Carragher academy, plans began to change, eventually leading to the club buying out their former home.

As part of the move, the emblem of the LFC women’s team, which previously trained at Tranmere’s base on the Wirral, will move to the club’s official crest to bring the two operations closer together.

“This is truly a historic moment for Liverpool Football Club and the continued commitment of the LFC Women’s Council to raise and develop our first women’s team and a first-class professional gaming academy,” said Liverpool Managing Director Andy Hughes.

“We also have the opportunity to further develop the use of the site to support the local community, using it as an additional base for the LFC Foundation.

“We are pleased that FEFA (Fowler Education and Football Academy) will continue to use the site for their college, which provides sports and educational opportunities for young people.

“We have always taken the opinion of the local community seriously and look forward to renewed engagement with them in the near future.”

Torus will use proceeds from the sale of Melwood to build much needed homes in Merseyside.

Development is also continuing at a brisk pace at Anfield, where the 282-tonne roof of the old Anfield Road stand has been removed to make way for the completion of a new stand due to open early next season to increase the stadium’s capacity to 61,000.
