Desperate to expand their buffer over the drop zone on Sunday lunchtime, Lecce will meet Sampdoria at the Ettore Giardiniero stadium.
Let’s start with the hosts, although Lecce could start Serie A this weekend, keeping the five-point buffer from sliding into the relegation zone, the Salentines are in the midst of a real top-flight nightmare. Last seen, Marco Baroni’s team, last seen ending up losing 2-1 at home against fugitive leaders Napoli, have now lost each of their last six home matches on the rebound – a streak that goes all the way back to a win by score 2:1. vs. Atalanta on 19 February. Free-falling in the Serie A standings and looking firmly over his shoulder at the bottom three, Lecce continues to show a number of defensive problems this season. In fact, Sunday’s hosts have only recorded one top-flight clean sheet in their last 12 attempts. It should also be noted that Baroni’s wards finished eight out of nine previous home matches with more than 1.5 goals.
On the away side, while Sampdoria could have survived the international break with a decisive 3-1 home win over Verona on 19 March, it looks like it was nothing more than a small boost for Dejan Stanković’s side. Bottom of the Serie A table and already 11 points behind safety, the Bluecherchiati have come under scrutiny this season. They were last seen in another nightmarish game when they were defeated 3-2 by Cremonese at home. Sunday’s visitors have won just one victory in the top flight since 4 January. After marking their return after a two-week break with a regular 3-0 draw at the hands of Roma, Sampdoria showed some pretty blatant defensive problems. Having landed 11 strikes in just the last four matches in Serie A, we expect there could be another nice development here.
