LaLiga News: Xavi defends ‘vital’ Busquets after Clasico criticism

Xavi says midfielder Sergio Busquets remains “vital” to Barcelona, insisting his captain will make the decision whether to stay at the Camp Nou next season.

Busquets was criticized for his performance as Barcelona suffered a 3-1 defeat to Clásico rivals Real Madrid on Sunday, replaced by Gavi at the hour mark at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The future of the 34-year-old, who has won 30 silver medals in his 14 years with the club, has been the subject of speculation as his contract expires at the end of the season.

However, Xavi still sees the defensive midfielder as a key component of his team, saying: “When you lose, we all become vulnerable. For me, Busquets is still important.

“There will be games where he plays less or doesn’t play, but he will still be vital. Boozi and the other captains add.

“We have a healthy locker room and it makes me feel like things will work out in the end. There is a good atmosphere and positive.

Reports say that Major League Soccer team Inter Miami is looking to take Busquets to the United States after his contract expires, and Xavi says his former teammate will have the final say on his future.

“His contract is ending, this is a reality, and we will see what will happen during the season, how he feels and how he performs,” Xavi added.

“This is a very personal decision. I also left Barcelona despite being offered a contract extension. Niko [Gonzalez] as well as [Miralem] Pjanic decided to leave.

“We have options; Frankie [de Jong], Frank Kessy or try a central defender, which would not be the most appropriate. That’s why Bushi is so important.”

Barcelona will return to the league when they host Villarreal on Thursday, where they will try to avenge their 2-0 loss to the Yellow Submarine in May, their only loss to Villarreal in the duo’s last 26 league meetings (W19 H6).
