LaLiga News: Spain defender Gaia spoke about the hopes for the World Cup after the extension of the contract with Valencia

José Gaja considers himself a one-club man after signing a new contract with Valencia as he has expressed hopes to represent the club in the World Cup.

Gaja has been a first-team regular since graduating from Valencia’s academy in 2012 and has made 239 La Liga appearances.

Appointed as captain in 2020 following Dani Parejo’s move to Villarreal, Gaja on Wednesday signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until the end of June 2027.

The 27-year-old made his international debut in 2018 and is looking to be part of Luis Enrique’s team in Qatar, though he has to contend with the likes of Marcos Alonso and Jordi Alba.

“Every time I leave with the national team I try to represent Spain and I think that’s the best a player can expect,” Gaja told Valencia’s official website.

“The squad list hasn’t been released yet, but I’m going to give it my all at Valencia to be there.”

When asked about possible further updates in the future, he added: “I would love to play 1,000 more games, but at the moment my mind is not thinking. I also have to earn this extension and I will do my best for that.”

As part of Valencia’s success in the 2019 Copa del Rey, Gaja is hopeful that he can play his part in bringing the club back to the top in the coming years.

He said: “I’ve managed to play in two finals in recent years and I’m keen to keep playing at Valencia and work to get us back to the top.”
