Real Madrid suffered a sad end to a humiliating week when they were stunned 2-1 by Espanyol, missing the opportunity to restore a three-point lead at the La Liga lead.
Real Madrid fell victim to one of the biggest shocks in midweek Champions League history when they were incredibly beaten 2-1 by Moldovan rookies Sheriff at the Santiago Bernabeu.
And now they lead La Liga only by goal difference after a lame performance at the RCDE Stadium, where Espanyol took the lead 2-0 thanks to goals from Raul de Tomas and Aleix Vidal.
Karim Benzema was in excellent form and gave Madrid hope in the 71st minute, but the visitors were once again left to reflect on a humiliation despite their striker’s best efforts.
Aside from a couple of gentle shots from Benzema, Real Madrid struggled to create chances early despite possession of the ball, and were penalized against the game run when De Tomas stole at the near post to turn home a cross below from the right by Adrian Embarba.
