LaLiga News: Courtois took the Yashin Trophy after heroism in the Champions League final

Thibault Courtois was named the best goalkeeper in the world by France Football on Monday when he took home the 2022 Yachine Trophy.

The 2021/22 Outstanding Goalkeeper award went to Courtois ahead of Alisson, Ederson, Edouard Mendy and Mike Meignan.

Liverpool’s Alisson finished second behind Courtois, who inspired Real Madrid to win the Champions League final against the Reds in Paris last season.

It was the performance of the Belgian national team in this match that certainly brought him the highest honor and helped him to take seventh place in the Ballon d’Or voting.

Courtois made nine saves – the most recent record since Opta data was first collected in 2003–2004 – and prevented 2.5 goals, according to expected goals from target data, in a 1-0 win.

Madrid also won La Liga, ending the best season of Courtois’ career.

Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Yashin Trophy in 2021, also bringing glory to Italy at Euro 2020, but this time he didn’t make the top 10.
