Barcelona’s injury problems worsened as midfielder Pedri and left-back Jordi Alba were sidelined due to muscle injuries sustained in the 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Alba was eliminated in the 74th minute of the Champions League game on Tuesday with a hamstring problem, while Pedri played fully on his return to the field after a three-week rest.

Barça announced on their official website on Wednesday that Pedri is suffering from a thigh problem and has joined Alba in the treatment room ahead of Monday’s LaLiga match against Granada.

No timing has been given for either player to return to action.

“First team player Pedri has an injury to his left quadriceps muscle,” Barca revealed. “The player is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.

“Tests carried out on Wednesday morning on first team player Jordi Alba show that he has a hamstring injury in his right thigh.

“The player is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

Barça’s injury problems are piling up ahead of an intense five-game spell in fifteen days, including a massive clash with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid early next month.

Martin Braithwaite is expected to skip the rest of 2021 after undergoing knee surgery, while fellow strikers Sergio Aguero, Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati are also out of action.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Barça boss Ronald Koeman believes the club’s medical department is partly responsible for the growing absentee slate.

Alba’s loss will leave a big void to fill in the troubled left-back area, with youth sector product Alejandro Balde entering the field for his first-team debut in the hefty defeat to Bayern.

Pedri has also been Koeman’s starter for the past 13 months, making 55 appearances in all competitions since the start of last season – only Youssef En-Nesyri (57) and Manu Trigueros (59) have been used more often among La Liga clubs. .
