LaLiga News: Ancelotti refuses to criticize Benzema after Real Madrid surrendered a perfect record

Carlo Ancelotti has refused to criticize Karim Benzema after the striker missed a penalty for the first time this season in La Liga against Osasuna.

Despite Benzema returning from a three-week injury hiatus, Madrid had an incoherent display on Sunday, squandering a first-half lead when Quique Garcia called off Vinicius Junior’s successful debut.

Benzema had a chance to lead Madrid to their seventh consecutive league win when David Garcia was sent off for pushing an attacker six yards off the pitch, but the France star hit the crossbar.

After that, 10 Osasuna held one point and Benzema missed three penalties against Jagoba Arrasate’s side in La Liga this year.

However, Ancelotti refused to blame Benzema for the result and insisted that Madrid performed well, telling DAZN: “Karim usually scores.

“The match was not spectacular, but after the conceded goal, the team played as it should have.

“Karim had no problem starting the 90 minutes game. He needs to get in better shape by playing.

“This is a football accident that can sometimes happen. We were quite strong defensively, we had a good balance, we hardly missed any counterattacks.”

Osasuna have drawn against Madrid three times since the start of the 2020/21 season, more than any other team in La Liga.

Madrid’s failure to score the winning goal means they are trailing Barcelona on goal difference at the top, with midfielder Dani Ceballos saying they lacked momentum in Sunday’s draw.

“We wanted three points, we tried to the end, but we lost two points,” he said. “We improved in the last minutes, but we couldn’t win.

“We weren’t good either in goal or with the ball, we didn’t have enough dynamics. We have another game on Wednesday [against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League] meet in a good way.
