Gavi lost his first-team status and jersey number at Barcelona after La Liga blocked his registration.
The Spain international was registered by Barça as a first team player in January and it was announced that he would wear the number six shirt.
However, La Liga sought to overturn the court ruling that ruled in favor of Barcelona, and the league won its way earlier in March, giving it the right to cancel Gavi’s registration.
Barcelona were told they could not sign the 18-year-old as they did not have a place in their payroll.
Subsequently, Gavi was given back his youth contract, meaning he could leave Barça as a free agent at the end of the season.
Leaving the Camp Nou is unlikely for a teenager. However, in its current form, Gavi will have to wear his old jersey number 30 until the end of the campaign.
After a breakthrough 2021/22 season, Gavi has made 37 appearances for Barça this season and his demotion does not mean he cannot continue to play for Xavi’s team.
