Klopp’s Disappointment: Liverpool’s Capitulation Prevents Them from Catching Up with Man City

Jurgen Klopp expressed his disappointment with Liverpool’s capitulation against Manchester City, suggesting there was “nothing good” in their performance.

The Reds were the first to strike at the Etihad Stadium through Mohamed Salah but were subsequently defeated 4-1 by Premier League champions Pep Guardiola.

Despite the absence of leading scorer Erling Haaland due to injury, the hosts ruthlessly dismantled their guests, and three goals in the second half caused damage.

The nature of Liverpool’s concessions after the break left their manager angry at their performance, deploring their inability to stop their opponents in the decider.

“We just had to watch how they did whatever they wanted to do,” he told BT Sport. “We were lucky they weren’t in a greedy mood. Nothing good can be said about this game.

“This is a game that we have to use and make clear what things can’t happen (in the future). We can’t help but have problems in key areas or be so open.

“I’m standing here and I have to explain it, but I can’t explain it. I can’t change it now, I can (only) report what I saw. We’ll talk about it tomorrow, (but) these things have happened too often.”

After Julián Alvarez equalized, Kevin De Bruyne went on half time with his full squad to finish less than a minute into the second half and set the tone for Liverpool’s collapse.

Further goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish meant the Reds missed a chance to close a five-point gap against fifth-placed Newcastle, who also have a game in hand.

Klopp was at a loss over their full reversal, telling BBC Match of the Day: “The first half was the kind we’ve seen several times. We played calmly, collectedly and created problems for them.

“But the exit after the break and two quick goals conceded broke everything. The way we gave in is hard to accept. (It) is totally unacceptable, to be honest.”

“City (was) completely under control after that. We were open and they could do whatever they wanted. That they only scored one goal could have been different and that’s very bad news for us.”
