Klopp singles out Alexander-Arnold for praise after ´very helpful´ defensive display

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised Trent Alexander-Arnold after Harvey Barnes’ strong defensive performance in a 2-1 win over Leicester City on Friday.

The Reds picked up their fourth consecutive league win, two points clear of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in an attempt to salvage their campaign after a sluggish start.

Two own goals from Wout Faes at the end of the first half gave Liverpool points after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall raced through the Reds’ defense to open the scoring in the fourth minute.

Alexander-Arnold, who had a mixed season, received praise from Klopp as the Reds held back the Foxes by squashing the Barnes threat from Leicester’s left flank.

“Really good, and not for the first time,” Klopp told reporters. “It was really good, very helpful and very important at times like this. Very, very helpful.

“I think everyone knows how good Harvey Barnes is at times like this and Trent did exceptionally well. We had some good shows, really good shows, but most of them were not great, let me put it this way, and that’s why it can happen.

“Now we only have two days [before facing Brentford on Monday] and we don’t know exactly who might go again and stuff like that.”

Klopp could have two headaches at once: full-back Andy Robertson was substituted a bit later due to injury concerns, and Harvey Elliott also left late.

The German revealed that the Scottish defender did indeed get injured during the warm-up but decided to start him anyway.

“Oddly enough, Harvey hurt Robbo a bit before the game,” Klopp said.

“In our warm-up, he kneed him in the thigh, so it was a dead leg. He could play, but at some point the muscle closed and he could not continue to play.

“Harvey got hit, which was pretty painful, but when you see the situation, it’s clear that it’s painful, but that’s about it, I think.”
