Klopp rules out playing ´monopoly´ in January transfer window

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool are not ready to play Monopoly in the January transfer window following the signing of Cody Gakpo.

The Reds moved quickly to secure Dutch striker Gakpo from PSV in a deal reportedly set to cost them around £37m (€42m).

Liverpool confirmed Gakpo’s arrival before the window even opened and the 23-year-old watched Friday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Leicester City at Anfield on Friday.

Klopp has said time and time again that the Merseyside club is not ready to spend money, and the Reds manager says the position has not changed.

Before Monday’s trip to Brentford, he said: “I’ve been on the job for over seven years now and every transfer window is the same. We talk about these things as if money doesn’t matter.

“I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but we have signed an outstanding player in Cody Gakpo and the next thing you read is who is next?

“To be honest, we cannot play like monopolists. Of course, we can’t just spend, and we never could. It’s a big part of my philosophy to work with complete faith and trust with the players we have, rather than constantly asking them questions, telling them we need another player for their position.

“I think with Cody it’s obvious, not just because of the emptiness we have, the quality he has, the perfect timing. If we had waited for the summer, it would have been more expensive or someone else would have taken it.

“We have a lot of potential and that makes a lot of sense with the games we will have; we will only have more games. It is clear that you need to bring quality to all positions. You need two teams at the same level that you can change, that’s what we’re trying to prepare.

“But people are surprised when I say that we will not be throwing money around. Again, if there is something we can do, with the right player, in the right financial situation, we will do it. If not, then we won’t.”

Klopp revealed that no member of his team has requested a new challenge this month.

He added: “No one came to me and asked me to leave the club. If it were, I would always listen to the player. The last thing I want to do is force someone to stay at Liverpool. But before the opening of the transfer window, no one has come here yet. Maybe they’re waiting for it.”

Liverpool increased their chances of reaching the top four by winning four Premier League matches in a row.
