According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Naby Keita is now on the verge of leaving Liverpool as a free agent with his contract expiring at the end of the season, with a renewal becoming less likely by the day.
Keita joined Liverpool in 2018 from RB Lepisig for a reported fee of €60m. He was seen as a big boost to Liverpool’s midfield after their hearts were broken by a loss in the Champions League final that year, but he never lived up to expectations as injuries seriously plagued his time at Anfield.
The 27-year-old has recently started playing matches and has even been one of the best players in a mostly unimpressive squad, but with a lot of rebuilding work planned for the summer, it looks like he won’t have a place at Liverpool from next season.
One player that Liverpool have been closely linked with is Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, and it has been reported that the Bundesliga team could switch to Keita as a potential replacement. Keita clearly doesn’t mind returning to Germany.
❗️News #Keita: 27-year-old boy on the verge of being fired #exercise as a free agent in the summer! An extension of the contract at this stage is unlikely. Many clubs are interested in signing him. But he will not join Galatasaray. His return to 🇩🇪 is not out of the question. Regular start in the last 4 matches. @SkySportDE 🇬🇳 pic.twitter.com/DdNHN1Hfhk
