International Federation’s Decision to Exclude Russia and Belarus from Ice Hockey: Unconvincing Justifications

On Wednesday, the International Ice Hockey Federation excluded Russia and Belarus from participating in all the world championships it organizes next season, including the US women’s championship.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said its decision to extend the ban, which will last more than two years after the end of the 2023/24 season, was due to player safety, competition and fan concerns.

Regarding allowing Russia to return to participation, Luc Tardif, President of the International Ice Hockey Federation, commented: “This is premature. There are many risks.”

For its part, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation dismissed the IF’s security concerns, stressing that they were “spurious reasons” for keeping its teams out of the competition.

“This is an unconstructive and useless decision for world hockey.

The Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be held in American cities next March or April, and the Men’s World Cup is also scheduled to be held next May in the Czech Republic.
