Inter cautions that the battle is not won yet despite a remarkable triumph over Milan in the initial leg.

Simone Inzaghi insists Inter still have work to do to reach the Champions League final despite an impressive 2-0 victory over AC Milan in their last four matches.

Inter crushed their city rivals with two goals in the first 11 minutes thanks to Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and could have easily ended the tie during a dominant first-half game.

Milan have improved since the break but will be thankful to still be within reach of the 2010 champions after a disappointing performance in front of their fans at home.

Inzaghi told Amazon Prime Video: “We could have scored more than two goals, but it was a great match. We have already gone through several rounds, we know what lies ahead.

“Now there will be a return match, our fans will be with us, and we clearly understand that we still have to make great efforts to make the dream come true.

“I asked for this yesterday, with all my heart and mind. They covered every inch of the field and those who came helped us.

“This is how performances like this are made. It’s right to be happy right now, but we know we’re still missing a piece.”

Striker Dzeko warned his teammates not to relax ahead of Tuesday’s second leg.

“Obviously we know we have a good result, but let’s put it this way, although the next game on paper will be an away game, it’s actually a home game for them with our fans only,” Dzeko told BT Sport.

“We have to be careful because it’s a good team, but if we play the way we do today, we’re on the right track.”

Milan boss Stefano Piolo was disappointed with his team’s approach.

He told Amazon Prime Video: “We will try to do better in the second leg. I think they got the better of tackles and second balls. The match was unsuccessful from a tactical and psychological point of view.

“We must proceed from the mood of the second half. We had a chance to get the game back on track.

“We will have to perform completely differently than today. For boys right now, there is frustration, but also the realization that the other leg is going to flip.”

Former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori has said all is not lost for AC Milan.

“Yes, obviously we are disappointed. Just like we started the game, conceding two goals at the very beginning,” Tomori told BT Sport.

“It was difficult, but this is only the first game. We can’t put our heads down.

“Obviously we are disappointed because it was a home game in front of our fans and we wanted to get a positive result in the second leg, but we know that if we play at the right intensity we can give them a bit of a hassle. ”
