The Premier League has referred Everton to an independent commission over alleged violations of profitability and sustainability rules.
On Friday, the Premier League announced that the Toffees allegedly broke the rules for the 2021–22 season.
Everton finished just four points above the relegation zone last season as Norwich City, Watford and Burnley were dropped out of the Championship.
The Merseyside club are caught up in yet another fight to stay in the top flight, in 15th place and just two points behind third-placed West Ham, who have two games to spare at Sean Dyche’s side.
Everton will have to wait impatiently to see if they will be deducted points.
The Premier League said in a statement: “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has referred information today regarding an alleged breach of the League’s profitability and sustainability rules by Everton Football Club to the Commission in accordance with Rule Premier League W.3.4. . The evaluation period for which a club is suspected to be in breach of the rules is the period ending in the 2021/22 season.
“The commission is independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The members of the commission will be appointed by the independent Chairman of the Premier League Judicial Panel in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20 and W.26.
“The trial before the commission, in accordance with Premier League rule W.82, will be confidential and will be considered privately.
“According to Premier League rule W.82.2, the final decision of the commission will be published on the Premier League website. The league will not comment until then.”
