´I never thought about anything else´ – Kvaratskhelia content at Napoli amid transfer speculation

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia enjoys life at Napoli amid reports linking him to a Premier League move and recalling how he desperately tried to sign with Parthenopia ahead of the campaign.

Kvaratskhelia has been a revelation since joining Dinamo Batumi’s Luciano Spalletti in July, scoring six goals and providing five assists in Serie A this season.

With Napoli eight points clear at the summit before Serie A resumed next month, no player in Italy’s top flight has been able to beat the Georgia winger’s total of 11 goals.

While the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham have previously been touted as possible future destinations for Kvaratskhelia, recent reports have suggested that Newcastle United have made him their top target in the January transfer window.

However, the 21-year-old cited life in Naples and his enjoyment of Spalletti’s playing style as key to his happiness, recalling his decision to join the club.

“Negotiations with Napoli lasted for a long time, about two years, I was very happy that such a wonderful team was interested in me,” he told DAZN. “I was itching to put on the Napoli shirt.

“From time to time I felt that there was interest from other teams, but after receiving the offer from Napoli, I never thought about anything else. I wanted to play for Napoli.

“When I was lucky enough to watch their matches, I thought that I could adapt perfectly to this type of game. I really liked the way they played, and that’s how it turned out.

“Here the city lives with love for football, everyone knows football in Naples. It’s motivating when the whole city is rooting for you and gives you love every moment.”

Asked if he surprised himself by becoming one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe, Kvaratskhelia added: “I am still far from that definition, but I will do my best to confirm it.

“Anyway, no, I didn’t expect that. It is very difficult to imagine that such a small country can be forced to play in such a big team.

“I dreamed of playing for such a famous top club as Napoli. However, I still have a long way to go and many goals to achieve.”

Kvaratskhelia leads his Napoli teammates in dribbles completed (19) and finishes with a created chance (12) in Serie A this season, leading fans to dub him ‘Quaradona’ after club legend Diego Maradona .

The Georgian could not hide his glee when asked about this nickname, saying: “When at least a small part of Maradona’s name is associated with yours, it is an honor.

“It creates an emotion different from others [nicknames] – it fills me with pride. Today Quaradonna is definitely my favorite.”
