Emery backs World Cup winner Martinez to push Aston Villa on

Unai Emery believes that Emiliano Martinez’s drive to win the World Cup will contribute to Aston Villa’s success until the end of the Premier League season.

Martínez helped Argentina rise to glory in Qatar 2022 with his heroic penalty shootout in the final against France and a brilliant save in extra time, key to bringing Albiceleste to a 36-year wait for a third world title.

By helping Lionel Messi secure football’s biggest trophy, Martínez sparked controversy over his post-tournament celebration, including mocking France star Kylian Mbappé whose hat-trick at the Lusail Stadium was inconclusive.

Emery, who previously promised to talk to Martinez about his antics, believes Martinez’s mentality is a role model for his clubmates to follow.

“I hope he comes [in] Focused 100 percent on Aston Villa, Emery told reporters ahead of Villa’s trip to Tottenham.

“Of course he needs to adapt quickly again. Every Aston Villa fan should be proud of him.

“We have a World Cup winner on the team and in the roster that he deserves. Every day he pushes his teammates on the training ground.

“When he comes back we should try to re-imagine him and be positive to use his energy and try to use his mentality to help us.”

Villa are in the middle of the Premier League table having lost on their return to action against Liverpool on Boxing Day.
