Dzeko Contemplates Lukaku’s Unwarranted Treatment at Coppa Italia

Edin Dzeko has spoken out about the racist abuse experienced by Inter teammate Romelu Lukaku, calling it something “that should never happen on the football field”.

Belgium striker Lukaku was insulted by Juventus fans during the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final last week.

This came against the backdrop of a particularly fierce 1-1 clash, with Samir Handanović and Juan Cuadrado also receiving red cards for their involvement in the brawl.

Ahead of the second leg later this month, Dzeko acknowledged that these developments could not have been allowed to happen, while also speaking about Inter’s wider cup ambitions.

“Some things happened during the match that should never happen on the football field,” he told N1. “They have already been talked about and written about.

“Our fans supported us throughout the match. I thank them for their support on the field. We had a good relationship from the first day (I arrived) at Inter.

“This season I have already won a trophy, but the goal is to always win new titles. In Milan, I won three. I know how important it is for the club to participate in the fight for the Scudetto.

“The fight against Juventus is open. At the San Siro we will have to play even better (if we do) to try to reach the final and win the Coppa Italia.”

Before the second leg, Dzeko will have urgent European commitments as his team is set to take on Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals.

On Wednesday, they will host Juventus for two weeks, with both teams hoping to reach the May final against Fiorentina or Cremonese.
