Depay backed to ´make a difference´ for Barcelona as Xavi rules out January business

Xavi backed Memphis Depay to “make a difference” for Barcelona in the second half of the season after he ruled out a January departure for the Dutch national team.

Depay’s future, limited to just three games this season, sparked speculation in the mid-season transfer window with fresh reports that the club needed to get rid of players to comply with La Liga financial rules.

A return to Manchester United has been touted for the 28-year-old who is on the hunt for reinforcements to attack, but Xavi expects Barcelona to not wrap things up this month.

“We are who we are and we are happy. Players want to win and they show me that in every practice. I am so happy with what I have,” he said at a press conference.

“I don’t want anyone to leave. I am delighted with the squad. There doesn’t seem to be a market for us.

“I am happy with Depay. His attitude is good and will be important to us. He has the ability to make a difference. He’ll have minutes like everyone else.”

Returning to La Liga after the World Cup break with a 1-1 draw in the Catalan derby against Espanyol, Barcelona faced a very different challenge in the Copa del Rey against Intercity, a side they had never faced before.

However, the third tier team boasts eight players who have spent time at Barcelona during their careers and Xavi knows that this serves as a motivation for their opponents.

“When you play against your former team, you are very motivated. They have eight players who have gone through this house and they are definitely very motivated,” he added.

Depay was named as part of the 22-man away team to face Intercity, among notable absentees including Robert Lewandowski and Pedri.
