Conte: Spurs need big investment to repeat ´miracle´ top-four finish

Antonio Conte believes Tottenham need to delve deeper into the transfer market if they want to repeat their ‘miracle’ top-four finish last season.

Spurs ended the 2021–22 campaign strongly to take rivals Arsenal to Champions League qualification, but their attempts to finish in the top four again this season were unsuccessful.

A 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa on Sunday, plus a draw against Brentford on Boxing Day, means Spurs have lost ground to Manchester United and the Red Devils have won three straight wins against Wolves on Saturday and went out on the fourth.

Conte’s team was unlucky with injuries, and key players such as Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison spent time on the sidelines.

Former Chelsea and Inter boss Conte believes Spurs should sign players to strengthen their squad and make them competitive in the Premier League’s top flight.

“I keep repeating that we did a miracle [finishing fourth last season]”, he told reporters after goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz doomed his team to defeat.

“Because we only played one competition with 12-13 players and they didn’t have any injuries in the last 15 games and we only played the best players. Arsenal were only four points behind and we finished 20 points short of Manchester City. We performed a miracle and I knew the situation.

“I have been very honest with the club and over the summer people have been talking about Tottenham as title contenders. In my experience, it was a little crazy to read this, but you have to accept it. If you have these injuries, it becomes difficult.

“To be title contenders you need a solid foundation, 14-15 strong players and young players to develop and every season you can add two players, two players to invest £60m, players £70m to boost your team level. ”

Despite losing to Villa, Conte was pleased with his side’s spirit and is confident his side will bounce back when they play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.

“In terms of performance, I’m not disappointed,” Conte said. “From start to finish, I saw the right commitment, desire and intensity.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment. Now we have to fight, strong, because we have the situation and in this league you can quickly slip through.

“I’m not afraid. I believe in my job and I believe in these players.”
