Sergio Busquets plays a key role at Barcelona and head coach Xavi says the club will do everything possible to convince the veteran midfielder to stay at Camp Nou.

The 34-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, by which time he will have spent a decade and a half in the senior team.

There have been rumors in the past few months that Busquets, who left Spain after being knocked out of the round of 16 at the World Cup, would leave the club at the end of the campaign for a move to MLS in the United States.

Speaking ahead of his team’s La Liga derby against Espanyol, Xavi revealed that there were no negotiations for an extension yet, but he hoped Busquets could be persuaded to stay.

“We didn’t talk about it,” he said. “There are six months of matches left, so we’ll see how it goes. We are focused on what will happen this year.

“We cannot make plans for next season, but we are looking forward to it. This is his decision.

“He has a contract until June, and then we’ll see. It’s more of a personal feeling. How he sees himself in the team, for me he is fundamental. It will depend on him more than on the club and me, but we will try to convince him.”

Barcelona resume their domestic season at the top of La Liga with two points to spare, although they may have been reworked by rivals Real Madrid when they take the field against Espanyol.

After the uncertainty of the last few seasons, Xavi is working to make Barcelona once again a perennial silver contender and is confident that his side will pick up where they left off after the mid-season break from the World Cup.

“I have good feelings,” he added. “People on the beat, with a winning mentality. I’m happy that I saw [in training] and i hope we at least [at the level again]”.

While Robert Lewandowski has received a temporary suspension of his playing suspension amid an appeal, Xavi is still looking to combine his attacking line with the Polish striker.

Off-season signing Rafinha failed to showcase the form he enjoyed at Leeds United, in part because he was not played on his favorite right wing.

Xavi admits the Brazilian is being used in a position other than his favorite, but reiterated that he believes he can still perform on the left flank.

“Rafinya is more comfortable on the right, but he can help us on the left,” he added. “He adapts. I spoke to him this week and he’s open.”
