Burnley achieved an immediate return to the Premier League by securing promotion from the Championship after beating Middlesbrough 2-1.

The Clarets were relegated on the final day of last season, ending a six-season run in the top flight.

But they enjoyed an inspiring first season under Vincent Kompany, suffering just two defeats in 2022-23.

Goals from Ashley Barnes and Connor Roberts, pinned down by Chuba Akpom’s penalty, gave Burnley a decisive win at Riverside.

Their 25th win of the season meant they secured promotion with seven more games to go.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace told Sky Sports after the promotion was confirmed: “Vincent has done something very, very special.

“It was a complete surprise, it was not part of our plans. Vincent and I talked about it in the summer, we gave ourselves two or three years, that was our plan. I think what you saw is a lot of magic coming together.

“This team is very, very good. You hear Vincent say this every week. They surprise each of us every day, they are phenomenal.”

The Clarets are 11 points clear of second-placed Sheffield United, who are looking to win promotion after relegation in 2021.

The Blades are eight more ahead of Luton Town, who are in third place, having played a game less.
