Bruno Labbadia returned to Stuttgart for a second term, and the former coach of the club signed a contract for two and a half years.

The German, who last managed Hertha Berlin until his sacking last January, previously captained the Bundesliga team between 2010 and 2013.

Now he’s returning as a sophomore to a club mired in the relegation zone with just three top-flight wins this season, taking over from interim Michael Wimmer.

Labbadia, a journeyman player who was a member of the 1993-94 Bundesliga-winning Bayern Munich side, spoke of his excitement about returning to the team on a contract until 2025.

“Everyone knows VfB is not just another club for me,” he told the club’s website. “I spent a very important period of my coaching career in Stuttgart and now I would like to [keep us] in the Bundesliga.

“We will immediately get to work and prepare everything for the start of training on December 12th. We will quickly get an overview of the team’s performance level and will work hard to make progress.”

During his previous spell, Labbadia managed to finish sixth with the club in the 2011–12 season and led them to the DFB-Pokal final a year later.

He will be joined by Bernhard Trares and Benjamin Sachs as assistant coaching staff at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

In addition to Hertha, Labbadia also managed Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and twice played for Hamburg.

Stuttgart will resume the Bundesliga season against Mainz on 21 January.
