Bundesliga News: “No one expected it to be so tense!” – Borussia will join Bayern at the Bundesliga summit as Bellingham sets

Marco Reus took a red-hot Borussia Dortmund to a three-way match at the top of the Bundesliga and declared: “We want to continue to ride this wave.”

The captain was reinstated in Borussia’s starting line-up on Sunday after missing out on a Champions League win over Chelsea in the middle of the week, replacing Jude Bellingham, who fell to the bench and passed the armband.

Reus scored a stunning free-kick and Borussia Dortmund’s third goal in a 4-1 win over Hertha, to the excitement of 81,365 fans at Signal Iduna Park. Karim Adeyemi, Donyell Malen and Julian Brandt also scored goals.

Bellingham came on as a second-half substitute for his 50th Bundesliga win. At 19 years and 235 days old, the England midfielder became the youngest player to ever reach that mark. This season, the teenager may have many more reasons to celebrate.

Dortmund’s only real downside was a leg injury Adeyemi suffered while scoring his second goal for Malen, and the striker is likely to be out for a few weeks.

Dortmund have won all eight of their games since the German season resumed after the World Cup and the winter break, and just a few weeks ago took the lead, exiting the title race.

“Before the winter break, no one expected the top of the table to be so crowded,” Royce said. “We started a race that we continued today. We want to keep riding this wave and in the end you will see what comes out of it.”

Union Berlin is a surprise in a group of three teams at the summit. Opta’s records show that for the first time in the three-point-for-win era that began in 1995-96, the three teams were tied on points after matchday 21 of the Bundesliga.

Speaking to DAZN, Reus said: “You win, but you also can’t be an inch behind, otherwise it will be difficult. We do not play stars from the sky, we are efficient. When I scored my free kick, I realized as soon as the ball left my foot that it could be dangerous.

“I am happy that after a long break I managed to score again from a free kick.”

It was Reus’ first free-kick in the Bundesliga since he scored against Bayer Leverkusen in May 2021, which itself came after a five-year wait.

The strike was called shortly after Bellingham entered the fight and Dortmund withdrew in the final quarter.

Union squandered a chance to take the title lead with a 0-0 draw at home to Schalke earlier on Sunday.

Bayern hold on to first place thanks to superior goal difference (plus 40), with Borussia in second and Union in third, but it’s clear this is now the right title.

The momentum is at Dortmund, given that Bayern lost 3-2 to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

The Classicer is waiting in six weeks, when a lot could be at stake.

Striker Brandt said: “We still have a long way to go, but the same goes for Union and Bayern. Before the winter break, we made our way out of the current situation very well. I am very happy today for Marco Reus, who scored a wonderful goal.”

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic will wait to see Adeyemi pass the injury tests, but the prospects for his early return look slim.

“He probably won’t be available to us for the next few games,” Terzic said, “but we hope it won’t be too long before he can return.”
