Bundesliga News: Haller hails Borussia Dortmund’s ‘unforgettable’ debut after cancer recovery

Borussia Dortmund striker Sebastian Haller described his debut as “unforgettable” after his first appearance since recovering from testicular cancer.

The Ivory Coast international signed for the Bundesliga last year but was diagnosed with a tumor just days after leaving Ajax.

After going through several rounds of treatment, Haller scored a hat-trick in a friendly against Basel earlier this month and enjoyed his first competitive performance in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Augsburg.

After receiving applause after coming on as a substitute in the second half, the striker was stunned by the reaction.

“The reception I received was something incredible, unforgettable,” he told DAZN broadcaster. “I was just happy to be here and take my first steps on the field.

“This is something we can take with us to the team, this atmosphere, we can use [it] win games.”

Haller, who wore boots marked “F*** Cancer*,” showed no signs of serious rust during his half-hour cameo in “Black and Yellow,” although he admitted he still had work to do.

“There are still a few things that need to be done to reach full physical fitness,” he added. “At the moment I’m just focused on work. In the coming weeks and months you will see how things go.”

Dortmund are sixth in the Bundesliga, seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich, in what promises to be a competitive race for European qualification.

They will travel to Mainz next Wednesday and end the month away against Bayer Leverkusen next Sunday.
