Brighton boss praises Potter’s legacy as De Zerby expresses regret over his sacking from Chelsea

Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi is ‘greatly sorry’ about the sacking of his predecessor Graham Potter from Chelsea, but praised his legacy at the Seagulls.

Potter left Brighton to take charge of Stamford Bridge last September following the Blues’ decision to sack Thomas Tuchel.

But the Englishman was brought in just six months after Chelsea were stuck in mid-table and saddled with many expensive contracts.

De Zerby, who has filled a void at Brighton, sympathizes with the man he replaced and thanks him for the team he was able to inherit.

“I’m very sorry (that he’s leaving),” he said. “Bad news for coaches. I think you pay too much attention to coaches.

“Players are always the most important thing and I don’t like it when coaches are fired because the responsibility is not only on them.

“Players, the club is not good news. I want to say thank you to Graham Potter. I have a team with a very good attitude and mentality.

“It’s hard when you don’t know the situation or the other dressing room. I don’t like talking about other teams and coaches. I’m really sorry because when situations like this come up, it’s sad.”

Having backed a promising start to Potter’s season to keep Brighton in the thick of the surprise European race, De Zerby was already linked with replacing him again at Chelsea.

However, the Italian is solely focused on the Seagulls, adding: “We are playing very well now, but if we want to achieve our goal, we need to improve.

“Our goal is to play in Europe. What competition? Let’s see. We want to play three times a week next year.”
