Seeking to open the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign with an early statement on home soil, Eintracht Frankfurt will welcome Darmstadt into the city on Sunday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts missing out on another top six finish last season, Eintracht Frankfurt will be desperate to make a name for themselves here. Continuing their adventure in the DFP Pokal earlier this month as they fought their way to a routine 3-0 win away at Lokomotiv Leipzig, the former Europa League champions should feel the golden chance when they return to the Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday afternoon. While the Eagles could have suffered at the hands of RB Leipzig in the DFP Pokal Final on June 3, Dino Toppmoller’s men certainly impressed many with their continued success on home soil last season. Finishing the 2022/23 campaign undefeated in each of the last eight matches in a row in front of their fans, it should also be noted that in the last 10 months Eintracht have not lost a single home game at Deutsche Bank Park.
As for the away side, while Darmstadt may have shocked many by winning a return to the Bundesliga last season, it’s no secret that Thorsten Lieberknecht’s side are up for a real uphill battle this time around. Failing to gain any momentum earlier in the month when they were relegated from the DFP Pokal due to a 3-0 away thrashing of Homburg’s minor leagues, the Blues also ended the 2022/23 campaign in the midst of an unsettling rut on the road. Of note, the Lillys have lost five of their five seven second tier competitions outside of Hesse. Knowing they’ll face a huge challenge when they travel to Frankfurt this weekend, Darmstadt should be worried about their recent wet meeting with Sunday’s hosts. Hurt by a dynamic 4-2 defeat when they went to Deutsche Bank Park on February 4th, we expect the same result here as well.
