Hoping to find a way out of the relegation zone on Saturday afternoon, Schalke will head to the WWK arena when they face Augsburg.
Starting with the hosts and ultimately defeated by defending champions Bayern Munich 5-3 last weekend, Enrico Maassen’s men will be happy to return to their homeland. While the Bayern-based side may not have been able to win back-to-back Bundesliga victories since October, the Reds have an impressive seven points headroom to keep out of a relegation brawl. While Augsburg may have shown some lingering defensive problems since the 2023 opening, the former Borussia Dortmund coach has seen his team continue to shine at the WWK Arena. In fact, last seen by their supporters in a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, Saturday’s hosts have won each of their last five home games in a row on home soil – a streak that dates back to 12 November.
On the away side, while Schalke could once again be in the middle of another Bundesliga relegation scramble, Thomas Reis’ side are enjoying a recent buff. After a tough game last weekend with a 2-2 draw against bitter local rivals Borussia Dortmund, the Blues have not lost in any of their last seven home games in a row. With their purple spot at the top level going back to a 6-1 game against RB Leipzig on January 24, the Gelsenkirchen team will be desperate to cause a Bundesliga upset here. With their recent flurry underscored by a 2-1 win over Stuttgart last month, Schalke have scored over 1.5 goals in their three consecutive matches. Likewise, since both sides have scored goals in three of the last four meetings between opponents on Saturday, we expect the same outcome here.
