Barcelona’s Official Representative Addresses Potential Return of Messi

Barcelona vice president of marketing Julie Gio said Spanish League president Javier Tebas would take a “stupid” step if the Catalan club was prevented from reviving their Argentine star Lionel Messi.

Geo’s response came a day after Tebas said: “We will not amend the financial control laws that La Liga clubs have agreed to to register Messi, even if we would like him to return to our league.”

Gio said in statements to Radio Catalunya about the possibility of Messi returning to the Catalan team that left him in the summer of 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain: “This (Messi’s return) will be good news, it will not be in the numbers that have been published, but that will be great news.”

He added: “He is still the number one player in the world, without a doubt. It’s clear that his return will be positive in the marketing world, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be back.”

When asked by Gio if Tebas would benefit from the League’s help to bring Messi back to La Liga, he replied: “Of course, and it would be foolish not to help us terminate this agreement for us.”

Messi’s contract with Saint-Germain expires at the end of the current season, and so far the Argentine star has not renewed his contract or signed with any club.
