Barcelona denies Laporte violated club rules over construction of Camp Nou

Barcelona have denied allegations that President Joan Laporta violated club rules by handing out a contract to build the Camp Nou.

The Espay Barca project was first approved in April 2014, when club members voted in favor of a major renovation of the Camp Nou stadium and its surroundings.

Another referendum in April 2021 ratified the financial proposal, which increased the project’s maximum budget to 1.5 billion euros.

This will increase the stadium’s capacity by 6,000 to 105,000 spectators, as well as install a retractable roof, and improve 40,000 square meters of land.

An announcement earlier this month confirmed that Turkish company Limak would be responsible for the renovation of the stadium, but a report by Spanish digital newspaper El Confidencial on Monday argued that the club’s contract bidding process should have ruled out the business in question.

According to El Confidencial, Limak should have been excluded because it allegedly failed to provide evidence of the construction of a stadium with a capacity of more than 40,000 people over the past 10 years and did not provide two references to buildings built in Spain worth more than 150 million euros during that same period. period.

The publication speculated that the alleged oversight jeopardized Barça’s building license at the local council, but the club insist the allegations are inaccurate, pointing to a “new tender process” dated 1 September 2022.

A lengthy statement began: “Barcelona wants to refute an article published today, Monday, January 23, 2023, in El Confidencial under the heading: “Laporta violated the rules of Barca to give work at the Camp Nou to the Turkish company Limak.”

The letter highlighted five specific sections of the report, followed by the phrase “FALSE” and an explanation, with most points going back to Barça, emphasizing the start of a new tender process in September.

“Specifications for proposals for the restructuring of Camp Nou have been announced to all bidders and are effective as of September 1, 2022,” the statement said. “The terms and conditions set out therein do not require companies bidding to build a football stadium with more than 40,000 seats or two facilities in Spain.

“Before this bidding process, there was a process that started in 2017 and was canceled in December 2020 through an official communication on the Barcelona Supplier Portal to all participating companies at that time.

“Only in September 2022, a new bidding process began, as a result of which the project was awarded to LIMAK as the company with the highest rating.

“There were no breaches of conditions as they were related to the new tender process, which is dated September 1, 2022.”

He added: “As we have pointed out earlier, the document [that El Confidencial claimed to have seen] we are talking about a pre-selection that began in 2017 and in no way corresponds to the details in the conditions established on September 1, 2022.

“The process of obtaining a building license from the Barcelona City Council is completely independent of the process by which the company decides to proceed with the construction.

“The building permit is not at risk in any way because the license lists the name of Barcelona as the initiator of the construction and not the construction company.”
