Baena expresses anger over assault allegedly committed by Valverde

Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena says he is “very sad about the aggression” after he was allegedly attacked by Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde after Saturday’s match.

Baena played a full part in La Liga competition at the Santiago Bernabéu and assisted a late Samuel Chuquese goal as Villarreal stunned Madrid 3-2.

According to widespread rumors, the Spain under-21 international was involved in a heated confrontation with Valverde shortly after the game.

Valverde is said to have punched Baena in retaliation for the derogatory remarks the latter had made about his unborn child during a previous meeting between the parties.

Villarreal are reported to have documented the incident and are discussing next steps with local police.

Gisco Nadal, a Villarreal team delegate, wrote in a now-deleted tweet: “Fede Valverde, rude and cowardly.”

Baena took to Instagram shortly after news of the incident broke to apparently deny previous comments that were attributed to him.

“I am very pleased with the impressive victory of the team at such a stage as the Santiago Bernabeu,” he said.

“But at the same time [I am] very saddened by the aggression that I experienced after the match, and surprised by what they say about my person. It’s completely wrong that I said that.”

Baena has represented Spain in all age categories from under 16 and has made over 50 appearances for Villarreal since his senior debut in July 2020.

Neither Villarreal nor Madrid have yet officially commented on the incident.
