Arsenal sign Kivior to further strengthen squad for Premier League title challenge

Arsenal have further strengthened their Premier League squad with the signing of centre-back Jakub Kivior from Serie A team La Spezia.

The leaders of the English top division had previously overlooked Mihail Mudrik, but Leandro Trossar and Kivior joined them this month.

The club reported that Poland international Kivior signed a “long-term contract” at the Emirates Stadium, while Arsenal reportedly paid Spezia £22m (€25m).

“It’s great that Jakub is joining us,” Mikel Arteta said. “He is a young all-around defender who has shown great potential and qualities with Spezia in Serie A and internationally with Poland.

“Jakub is a player who will give us the strength and quality of our defensive part. We welcome Yakub and his family to Arsenal and look forward to working with him.”

Kivior still had two and a half years left on his contract with Spezia, for whom he had made 43 appearances since joining Slovak side Žilina in August 2021.

He has made 17 Serie A appearances this season and is third in blocked shots (18) and fifth in clearance (68) of all defensemen in the division.

The former Anderlecht youngster also started in all four of Poland’s 2022 World Cup matches, helping his team to close scores against Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Kivior will primarily provide cover and competition for Gabriel Magalhaes, who has played every minute for Arsenal in the Premier League this season.

The new signing was in the stands at Emirates Stadium on Sunday as Arsenal beat Manchester United to maintain a five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.
