Algerian striker apologizes after missing decisive penalty

Algeria’s top scorer, Ayman Mahjus, has become a source of ridicule on various social media for missing out on a decisive shoot-out that was wasted on the Greens, the locals’ dream of winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Algerian national team lost the league title to the local team of Senegal, which was crowned with the Shane 2022 title, last Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in the Algiers capital with a penalty shoot-out 4-5, after the final match in the original and extra time ended in a draw 0:0 .

Mahjus missed the fifth penalty, after the Italian Jorginho shot a light ball into the middle of the gate, the Senegalese goalkeeper easily blocked it.

Mahjus said in statements released by the Algerian website An-Nahar: “Actually, I gave the team everything I could, but unfortunately we were not lucky in the penalty shootout.”

And about missing a penalty, the USM capital player commented: “This is my way of shooting even with the club, but this time my luck has turned against me and the truth is that the Senegal national team deserves to win.”

Mahjus was the tournament’s top scorer after scoring five times, two goals away from his Malagasy rival, Razavindranaivo Coloina.

Mahjus concluded by saying, “I thank God for being the top scorer in the championship. I thank our fans for their support throughout the competition and we apologize for disappointing them.”

Most Algerian fans blamed him for missing the opportunity to be crowned “Shane 2022” and some Algerian fans resorted to posting videos in which they reenacted Mahjus taking the penalty against Senegal.
