Alba and Lahoz had forgotten first yellow card before Espanyol dismissal

Jordi Alba and referee Antonio Mateu Laos “forgot” the Barcelona defender’s first yellow card ahead of his dismissal against Espanyol on Saturday.

Barcelona drew 1-1 with their Catalan rivals on a bittersweet day for Alba, who became only the 12th player to make 300 La Liga appearances for the club.

Alba’s landmark exit was overshadowed as the left-back received two yellow cards within five minutes of Espanyol equalizing and Laos lost control of the final stages.

Laos, who hosted Argentina’s heated World Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands earlier this month, also sent off Vinicius Souza, while only a VAR review saved Leandro Cabrera after he was first shown a red card for stamping Robert Lewandowski. .

Alba will now be suspended for one match, meaning he will miss Barça’s match against Atlético Madrid at the Civitas Metropolitano on January 8.

The Spain international has revealed he has received his second yellow card after expressing his disappointment at the duel between Andreas Christensen and Joselu, whose penalty knocked out a Marcos Alonso header at the Camp Nou.

“I didn’t understand the exile and told him so,” Alba said in quotes published by Mundo Deportivo. “I went to Mateu to tell him what Joselu had done [Christensen’s] bed, nothing more.

“He thought it was the first yellow one, but he showed me the second one. It’s not even a map for me.

“I know that sometimes I make mistakes and protest too much because I am very impulsive and I have to correct this aspect, but this time it was not like that.”

Sergi Roberto, who wore the captain’s armband during Saturday’s derby, agreed, telling Movistar: “Alba forgot his first card. We were all a little surprised.”

Although Barça returned to the top of La Liga on goal difference, they were penalized for not turning their lead into maximum points by having over three-quarters of possession and landing 21 shots on goal.

“In the second half we wanted to score the second goal and make the game more controlled,” added Sergi Roberto.

“The game often stopped due to eliminations, cards, after which we could no longer play our own way.”
