    Ajax sack manager Schroeder

On Friday, Ajax Amsterdam sacked their coach Alfred Schröder after a 1-1 draw at home against Volendam, who are facing relegation in the Dutch Football League’s 18th round.

“It’s a painful but necessary decision,” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said on the club’s website. “In addition to a good start to the season, we’ve lost a lot of points for no reason.”

“Alfred gave us time and our confidence to change the course of things,” he said, “but it became clear that he could not change the situation.”

Schroeder, 50, joined Ajax last summer from Brugge, replacing Eric Ten Hag, who joined Manchester United.

Ajax are going through a season of transition after a tumultuous summer transfer period that saw the club sell players for around €200m and boost it with just over half of the proceeds.

Ajax, defending champions, are fifth in the league with 34 points, seven points behind leaders Feyenoord.

Ajax have not won the league since last October 22, and the home failure was followed by elimination from the Champions League group stage.
